Description
Chief Looking Glass of the Nez Perce, Ceremonial Pipe. A priceless artifact of the Looking Glass band of the Nez Perce Tribe. This piece of history has been in our family's care since the summer of 1877. Great Grandfather John Alonso Miller was commissioned by the United States government to come to Idaho, in the spring of 1864, to be an interpreter for Chief Looking Glass (the younger) of the Nez Perce. He lived between Mt. Idaho and Jerry Washington with this Nez Perce bands. They summered near Mt. Idaho and wintered at Jerry Washington, which is at the base of Cloverland grade on Asotin creek. When reading the book Nez Perce Summer 1877: The U.S. Army and the Nez Perce crisis, By Jerome A. Greene. In chapter 3 (Looking Glass's camp and Cottonwood)it tells how the attack on the Looking Glass camp happened and that an Interpreter J.A. Miller was present. The attack happened so quickly and so early in the morning that the Nez Perce were driven away leaving most all of their belongings. J.A. Miller saved some of Looking Glass's possessions and after Looking Glass was killed in the Nez Perce war of 1877, held on to them and then later handed them down to his son Madison Earl Miller, and then Madison to his son Charles P Miller, and then Charles to his family. We, the heirs of the Miller family have treasured this artifact for 4 generations or 140 years. Now it's time to let it go, hopefully to a Museum, so more can see it. The pipe's value was assessed by well known Native American Artifacts collector, Cisco's of Coeur d' Alane Idaho to be over ,000.00 as just a Nez Percecollectible
, but with its connection to Chief Looking Glass, the value is unknown. The pipe has been custom framed in shadow box with museum glass and it comes with. (Buyer) We will box and ship to your location after payment. Please Email questions about the Pipe and payment arrangements.
