Description
Welcome!I'm offering for your consideration a stunning pair of earrings by Joe. H. Quintana of Cochiti Pueblo, one of the most important Native American silversmiths. The pictures don't reflect their beauty because they are shiney silver and capture reflections of the surround so appear to be mottled in color in the pictures. They aren't. They have no scratches and are in great condition.
The earrings have a diameter of 15/16" and they are domed. There is a shadowbox effect and hand pulled wire is spiralled in their center. They are finished closed, on the back and each is stamped with Joe H. Quintana's well documented hallmark of JHQ. They are clip-on earrings and work fine as such. They could be converted to pierced by a very competent jeweler. Condition is excellent vintage, wearable and collectible.
Joe H. Quintana of the Cochiti Pueblo lived from 1915-1991 and received many outstanding awards both for his silversmithing skills and artistic designs. He won 22 awards in the Gallup Inter-Tribal and the New Mexico State Fair till he stopped competing and said he was leaving that to his talented son. He began silverwork in the 1930's and was mentioned in John Adair's groundbreaking book "The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths" as one of the few successful silversmiths at that time (1944), earning then 00 a year. Later he said he earned more than that in one piece he sold. His work has become even more valuable as time has passed. Joe passed away in 1991 and late in his career there was a long waiting list to buy from him. Joe always used hand hammered ingot silver, as opposed to sheet silver. Cochiti Pueblo silversmith Joseph H. Quintana is a very important figure in Native American silver. He is considered to be one of the most innovative and versatile silversmiths of the 20th century. His work commands top prices when it can be found; most reside in private collections. During his lifetime he was known for his creative designs and craftsmanship. He was one of the most recognized students of Frank Patania Sr., also worked for Gans, for Covered Wagon, Packard's and Seligman's. There is an incredible Bud Vase by him in my store right now, (a picture of it is included above) which is part of a series discussed in the
Bailey book about him called "Joe H. Quintana: Master in Metal"
. There was a major exhibition of his work at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe in 2004.
All Joe H. Quintana's work is very collectible and usually very highly priced, but these are priced very low for the market. These earrings are both classic and also unique in their design so they will stand the test of time in all collections and will always be elegant. All hand constructed from ingot, there is always a special feeling about owning pieces like this from a great master, and that spirit stays with them.
