    Description

    Welcome!
I'm offering for your consideration part of a very small series made by Joe H. Quintana, of the Cochiti Pueblo, in about 1967. This lovely simple piece holds three flowers and is a bit over 9" tall. These have weighted bases so they don't tip over with the weight of the flowers. It's sterling silver and weighs 148.1 grams. The piece is signed on the small tag that is attached. This is very similar to the one in the Bailey book about him called "Joe H. Quintana: Master in Metal" the page of which is included above though that one is shorter and has an engraved base. The hallmark on the underneath of the base is of Webster Company, of North Attleboro Mass, since 1894! This piece would have been a rare collaboration between that company and Joe Quintana. Bailey mentions in her book that the bud vase was her favorite and keeps the flowers fresh. This would make a great house gift and is an important display item.
Joe H. Quintana of the Cochiti Pueblo lived from 1915-1991 and received many outstanding awards both for his silversmithing skills and artistic designs. He won 22 awards in the Gallup Inter-Tribal and the New Mexico State Fair till he stopped competing and said he was leaving that to his talented son. He began silverwork in the 1930's and was mentioned in John Adair's groundbreaking book "The Navajo and Pueblo Silversmiths" as one of the few successful silversmiths at that time (1944), earning then 00 a year. Later he said he earned more than that in one piece he sold. His work has become even more valuable as time has passed. Joe passed away in 1991 and late in his career there was a long waiting list to buy from him. Joe always used hand hammered ingot silver, as opposed to sheet silver. Cochiti Pueblo silversmith Joseph H. Quintana is a very important figure in Native American silver. He worked from the 1930s to 1991. He is considered to be one of the most innovative and versatile silversmiths of the 20th century. His work commands top prices when it can be found; most reside in private collections. During his lifetime he was known for his creative designs and craftsmanship. He was one of the most recognized students of Frank Patania Sr., also worked for Gans, for Covered Wagon, Packard's and Seligman's (there's a Seligman's piece in my store right now and a bolo and buckle set by Joseph Quintana is listed as well), among others.  There was a major exhibition of his work  at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in Santa Fe in 2004.
All Joe Quintana's work is very collectible. This is a stunning bud vase and the only one of his I've seen outside of the Bailey book. Note that he didn't make the same piece twice and even though this is similar to the one in the Bailey book, it because it is part of a series, it's also a one of a kind piece, as is all his work. This piece was probably also part of the Bailey collection. She had those tags with his hallmark made for her unsigned pieces of his. It's in excellent vintage and collectible condition with no problems. It's elegant and it's so fabulous!
