Description

George Oberteuffer Signed Antique Haunting Still Life Portrait Oil Painting53x46
Up for auction is an antique, oil painting, executed and signed by: George Oberteuffer, a listed artist.  Approx. size: 53" x 46".   Depicted is, most likely, the artist's wife.  The furnishings are seen in other paintings by the artist, so I assume this is the interior of the Oberteuffer home!
The choice of colors, striking composition, and extreme attention to detail, mark this as the hand of a master artist.
It has a spot of damage to the lower right corner (pic 5), and is signed on the back by Oberteuffer.
George Oberteuffer studied with William M. Chase and Thomas Anshutx.  He was a member of the National Academy, Sal des Independents, Salon d'Automine, Chicago Gallery Association, and the Chicago Painters and Sculptors.  In 1926 Oberteuffer was hired as the first teacher for the North Shore Art League.
He exhibited from the 1910's-30's, and his work is in the collections of the National Gallery, Brooklyn Museum, Milwaukee Art Institute, and the Columbus Art Museum.  He taught art at the Art Institute of Chicago.
A biography was recently published, learn more about this famous artist:
"Impressionist George Oberteuffer His Life and Work in France and America",
Paperback
– Unabridged, 2015
"Impressionist George Oberteuffer His Life and Work in France and America features more than 100 vibrant color plates of the artist's work. An engaging biographical and critical essay by art historian Kathleen Kienholz accompanies his paintings of city, country and coastal scenes in Europe and America. The oils, watercolors, drawings, and etchings reproduced in the book were obtained through the generosity of many donors including the Phillips Collection, the Brooklyn Museum, the National Academy of Design, and other museums and individuals. An appendix lists the titles and other information of more than 170 additional works by George Oberteuffer from exhibition catalogues, public sales, and Internet sites. The essay follows his life from his native Philadelphia (1878-1905) to France (1905-1919) and his return to the United States(1919-1940) where he taught and painted in Chicago, New York, Memphis, and art colonies in the Midwest and New England coast. The Foreword by independent art historian Dr. Carol Lowrey refers to George Oberteuffer as a "gifted painter" whose "career needed to be documented and his work put into perspective, especially in relation to the tradition of American Impressionism. Kathleen Kienholz has done just that..." A student of Thomas Anshutz and William Merritt Chase, George Oberteuffer was recognized in his lifetime for his originality and skill in capturing a sense of place in monumental city structures, country landscapes, quiet gardens in bloom, or busy harbors. His versatility is further evident in his sensitive portraits of family members and others. Except for short biographies and examples of his art in exhibition catalogues, very little information about him and his life has been available. This volume offers the art community and the many owners of George Oberteuffer's paintings a greater knowledge of his work and an opportunity to compare him with his contemporaries in the art world of the early 20th century."

Additional shipping expenses: packaging, driving the item to the shipper, actual shipping cost (which have risen recently), and, if international or media, waiting in line at the USPS for 15-45 minutes.  So if the shipping looks a little high, please remember - I never see 15-20% of the shipping I ask for.
Normally, I would make this auction with a 14 day return guarantee.  Ebay has recently begun a "defects, return" requirement.  Which states that only so many returns will be allowed a seller, per year.  When combined with eBay's rule allowing a buyer to return for no reason at all (buried deep within the user agreement), this is a recipe for disaster.  Liberal returns, will no longer be considered by sellers.  I will reduce the 14 day guarantee auctions which I post.  Now buyers will not have the return guarantees, and the sellers will be sanctioned, for allowing too many returns.  Therefore, eBay has, once again, promulgated rules which do not help either the buyer or seller, and only make both buyers and sellers look for alternative sites.
Even in a no return auction, the buyer is still covered, if the item materially differs from the description.
I FOLLOW ALL EBAY POLICES AND STRIVE FOR 5-STAR SERVICE EACH AND EVERY TRANSACTION. WHEN YOU GIVE 4 STARS IT MAY SEEM LIKE A GREAT SCORE, BUT, A 4 ON ANY STAR IS 4.0 AND EBAY CONSIDERS THIS A SUB-PAR MARK SINCE THE REQUIREMENT IS 4.40. IF YOU ARE PLEASED WITH THE TRANSACTION PLEASE RESPOND WITH ALL 5 STARS. IF YOU ARE NOT PLEASED LET ME KNOW AND WE WILL WORK TO MAKE IT THAT WAY.
In the rare event of an "Item not as described" claim, returns or refunds will only be accepted based on my description and photos, not information pertaining to the eBay catalog or item specifics.
