Vintage ButterscotchAmber Bakelite Faturan Necklace
Graduated Beads on String Cord
This necklace was passed down generations of family.
The last owner was a Hungarian relative
of Rom (Gypsy) descent.
She passed it to mother in early 1970's
and said it had be her mothers from the mid 1930's.
Lineage was the easy part, we were told it was faturan.
They tricky part is what exactly is faturan?
The "legendary" definition of faturan sometimes referred
to as Amber Faturan is as follows:.
The technique of sticking together the shavings of
amber together with a mixture of secret natural resins
and incense to turn it into a solid material.
Faturan is a material that derives from bakelite.
Bakelite is basically a thermosetting phenol synthetic resin.
Faturan was made by mixing bakelite with
natural, vegetal or synthetic dyes, amber powder,
all kind of fillers, additives, etc. To add to the mystery
these additive makes faturan
not always test positive for bakelite.
And each maker had their own recipe.
